Ulster County has a new designation that will allow it to receive federal assistance in the fight against drug trafficking and the heroin epidemic.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer Thursday announced that the President’s Office of National Drug Control Policy has designated Ulster County a federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, or HIDTA.

“So this is great news for Ulster County. I pushed hard for it,” said Schumer. “They applied the first time; they didn’t get it. They came to me. We worked with them on their application and praise God they got it.”

He says the designation will help the county address a recent uptick in heroin usage and drug-related crime by improving coordination among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as providing equipment, technology and additional resources that the county needs to tackle this challenge.
