NRC Issues Violation To Indian Point Owner

Federal regulators say the owner of the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester County failed to amend a reactor operator's license when the man developed sleep apnea.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced Tuesday that it issued a violation to Indian Point owner Entergy Nuclear. An NRC spokesman says the reactor operator never fell asleep at work and the disorder caused no problems. He says there are always multiple operators on duty. He says the license should have been amended to ensure the operator was being treated. An Entergy spokesman says the operator properly disclosed his condition and the violation was an administrative oversight. Apnea prevents restful sleep and causes drowsiness. Investigators found it caused a train engineer's sleepiness in a 2013 Metro-North derailment that killed four people in the Bronx.
