A section of a highway in Dutchess County will be named for a fallen police officer.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Friday announced that he had signed a bill to designate a section of Route 9 as the "Detective John M. Falcone Memorial Highway". Falcone was an 18-year veteran of the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department who lost his life on duty in 2011 while protecting a three-year-old girl from an armed assailant. Falcone was promoted posthumously to detective. The newly-designated portion of Route 9 covers the southern boundary of the City of Poughkeepsie to the northern boundary of the city. Democrats Terry Gipson and Frank Skartados sponsored the bill to designate the roadway in Falcone’s memory in the senate and assembly, respectively.
