Local Officials Say Newburgh Is Ripe For A Casino

WAMC, Allison Dunne

Two elected officials in Orange County have penned a letter to members of the New York State Gaming Facility Location Board, inviting them to tour an area they say needs a casino.

City of Newburgh Mayor Judy Kennedy acknowledged the Catskills’ need for a casino, but says:

“No one needs this more than the city of Newburgh.”

She says no other city, village, or town in the region has the level of poverty or joblessness of Newburgh. The casino proposal she supports is the Hudson Valley Casino & Resort in the Town of Newburgh, saying her city would reap the benefits. Here’s Town of Newburgh Acting Supervisor Gil Piaquadio.

“And we agree that Sullivan County deserves a casino project. The facts make it clear Newburgh deserves one as much, if not more.”

Developers have withdrawn two of the four casino proposals for Sullivan County, saying the prospect of a casino in Orange would hamper their ability to secure proper financing. Proposals are due June 30.
