A Westchester County legislator is pushing for the use of cleaner heating oil.
Legislator Catherine Parker, a Democrat from Rye, announced Wednesday that she has introduced legislation at the Westchester County Board of Legislators to ban the use of heating oils #6 and #4, a move she says would lead to cleaner air in the county. The announcement regarding the Westchester County 2014 Clean Air Act came at Thornycroft, a 99-unit residential cooperative building in Scarsdale. The building’s manager and superintendent say Thornycroft’s conversion from heavy oil to natural gas has resulted in a savings of about 45 percent from January to April this year. Parker says there are 507 properties in Westchester using the heavy, dirty oil #6 or a slightly less dirty #4. The American Lung Association of the Northeast supports the legislation.
