Hospital ER In Orange County To Stay Open Full Time

A hospital emergency room in the Hudson Valley will remain open 24/7. The decision, or pause in reduction of hours, according to the hospital’s president, comes after union members, state lawmakers, and community members waged a fight.

The Cornwall campus emergency room of Newburgh-based St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital will stay open around the clock. Hospital officials in September proposed closing the Cornwall ER from 10 p.m. till 10 a.m.  Democratic Assemblyman James Skoufis was one leading the fight against that plan.

“So after thousands of petitions and thousands of e-mails to trustees and rallies and forums and fighting for what we believe in, that is, basic health-care services in our community, I’m tremendously happy and excited and thrilled to share that we have saved the Cornwall emergency room,” Skoufis said.

Hospital leaders Wednesday met with Skoufis, Republican State Senator William Larkin, Democratic Assemblyman Frank Skartados, and state health department officials, to talk about how to improve the hospital’s fiscal condition and health-care services.
