NEW YORK (AP) — One of the people killed after a Metro-North train derailed was an audio technician headed to midtown Manhattan to work on the famed Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.
Longtime friend Janet Barton says James Lovell was taking the Metro-North from Cold Spring to New York City Sunday to do lighting and sound work on the giant tree. She called the 58-year-old father of three beloved and said he enjoyed wind surfing and playing guitar. Lovell was the husband of Philipstown Councilwoman Nancy Montgomery. Cold Spring is a village within the Putnam County town of Philipstown. Federal officials are investigating how the train that originated in Poughkeepsie derailed rounding a riverside curve in the Bronx early Sunday morning, killing four people and injuring more than 60 others. Also killed were 54-year-old Donna Smith of Newburgh and 59-year-old James Ferrari of Montrose in northern Westchester County. The fourth passenger who died is a 35-year-old woman from Queens.
