After many calls to reschedule public hearings regarding Rockland County’s controversial water plans, New York’s Public Service Commission has come up with new dates.
The Public Service Commission had selected September 9 and 10 to hear about the continuing need for United Water New York to develop a new water source - a more than $120 million desalination plant that has met opposition among some public officials, residents, and environmental groups. A number of lawmakers in the region objected to the dates because of conflicts with back-to-school meetings, insufficient time to review documents, and primary Election Day September 10. Democratic Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee is one who requested the date change and says she learned via a phone call from PSC staff that the public hearing dates have been changed to October 1 and 2. She applauded the PSC’s swift response, saying the new dates will ensure transparency and maximum public participation.
