A county executive in the Hudson Valley has proclaimed a day for homeless animals.
Orange County Executive Edward Diana visited the Warwick Valley Humane Society in Warwick Thursday and presented a proclamation to its president declaring Saturday, August 17, 2013 as “International Homeless Animals’ Day” in the county. He says the aim is to raise awareness about the plight of animals left abandoned or unwanted in animal shelters in Orange County and beyond, and to advocate spaying and neutering. As part of Homeless Animals Day, there will be a candlelight vigil Saturday night from 9-to-10 at the Village Green on Railroad Avenue in the Village of Warwick near the Warwick Valley Humane Society. According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are an estimated 6-8 million homeless animals entering animal shelters every year. About one-half of these animals are adopted, the other half euthanized.
