Land In Dutchess Is Donated For Conservation

Sixteen acres next to critical tidal habitats in a Hudson River estuary are now protected. The donated land is in New York’s Dutchess County.

Landowners have donated a conservation easement to environmental group Scenic Hudson. The 16 acres are adjacent to the Hudson River’s Vanderburgh Cove in Rhinebeck. Scenic Hudson President Ned Sullivan says the Cove is one of the Hudson River Estuary’s ecological powerhouses as well as a very popular paddling destination. The acquisition is part of Poughkeepsie-based Scenic Hudson’s ongoing Saving the Land That Matters Most campaign. The property contains more than half a mile of shoreline along two significant wetlands and adjoins 203 acres previously protected by Scenic Hudson through a conservation easement. Upland portions of the property will allow for the inland migration of species whose habitats face inundation by rising waters.
