ATLANTIC CITY – A study into the feasibility of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey taking over Atlantic City International Airport says there are opportunities for growth at the airport, Port Authority officials said Wednesday.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also announced his approval of a takeover of the facility by the bi-state agency.
When the Authority assumed control of Stewart Airport at Newburgh over five years ago, it was with the understanding that New Jersey could add an airport to the agency in the future. The Port Authority also operates JFK, Newark-Liberty and LaGuardia airports, which offer commercial service, and Teterboro Airport, which services the corporate and private aviation sectors.
Supporters of a Port Authority assumption of control in Atlantic City believe it would be a means of bringing overnight visitors to the casinos in that city. That could increase the number of airlines and flights, they believe. Currently, Spirit Airlines is the only carrier operating there.
Air Canada has already told the Port Authority they would consider service if the Port Authority takes over the airport.
The Port Authority board would have to approve any deal to assume operations at Atlantic City.
