About the Artists:

Jianling Yue teaches Chinese language and culture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). She acquired her artistic technique during childhood in her hometown, located in Shanxi Province. As an educator, Jianling is actively taking responsibility to impart knowledge, advance the culture, and contribute to society. For more than 20 years, Jianling has been passionately teaching Chinese language and culture, and held innumerable workshops and lectures on Chinese paper cut for all kinds of cultural activities and festivals. Her style of art integrates traditional colors like red and traditional motifs, such human figures, mythological legends with her own style which contains expanded themes and colors. You can learn more about Jianling here.

Mishka is a Schenectady based artist who has been practicing papercutting for over thirty years. She first learned from Yehudit Shadur, at a class held at the Schenectady JCC. Shadur is credited with reviving the Jewish paper cut tradition in the 20th century. Traditionally, Jewish papercutting is created by folding paper to create symmetrical and intricate designs. Mishka’s designs are not created with this method and are often nonsymmetrical and abstract. Mishka, like Jianling, uses expanded themes in her designs in addition to traditional Jewish symbols like the Star of David and hamsas. Learn more about Mishka on her website.

Funding is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts and Schenectady County Initiative Program.
