An upstate hospital's plan to build a multi-million dollar surgical center brings the internet concept of 'crowdfunding' into the mix.

Seeking to reach individuals who ordinarily might not give to such a cause, Ellis Medicine's bid to create a new $19.4 million Center for Surgical & Interventional Medicine at its Nott Street hospital in Schenectady has broken new ground:  The Times Union reports the hospital has established a presence on fundabilities-dot-com to help raise money for the planned 25,000 square foot expansion. Local firm Transfinder promises to match the first $5,000 in crowdfunded donations.
