Albany, NY – In today's Academic Minute, Dr. Jennifer Borton of Hamilton College explains why trying to suppress negative thoughts is often counterproductive.
Dr. Jennifer Borton is an associate professor of psychology at Hamilton College. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and education from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Minnesota. Her current research program involves understanding the effects of suppressing negative self-referent thoughts on mood, self-esteem and interpersonal processes. Her work in this area has been published in several journals, including the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology and Self and Identity.
