Calling it a “momentous day,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in New York City around midday Tuesday that the state has reached a 70 percent COVID-19 vaccination rate. The Democrat says “we can now return to life as we know it.”Cuomo says there will be fireworks in locations across the state Tuesday night to celebrate the lifting of remaining pandemic restrictions.

It comes nearly 15 months after statewide shutdowns in New York, which soon had the highest COVID-19 positivity rate in the country.
Although 70 percent of adults have received at least one dose of COVID vaccine in New York, the state's actual vaccination rate is much lower, including among minors.
