Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan says Matt Toporowski has been hired as Senior Assistant Corporation Counsel to focus on police accountability and implementing police reform.

Toporowski is an attorney who unsuccessfully challenged Albany County District Attorney David Soares in last year’s Democratic primary.

According to the mayor, who supported Toporowski’s campaign, he will work “closely with the Albany Police Department on police disciplinary proceedings” and help implement the police reform plan submitted to the state this spring.

The appointment comes days after Common Council President Corey Ellis announced the creation of a new Public Safety Commission with similar stated goals.
