A titan of Capital Region broadcasting has died. WRGB says Ernie Tetrault died at age 94 after an illness.

He was an anchor and reporter for the CBS affiliate for more than four decades. The station says Tetrault, who was born in Watervliet and grew up in Troy, began working in radio in high school, served in World War II, and started his television career in 1951.

In a video obituary, the station showed Tetrault reporting from the Capital Region, as well as war zones and political conventions.

Tetrault retired from the nightly newscast in 1993 after 42 years at WRGB.

WRGB VP & General Manager Vince Nelson said in a statement: “Ernie Tetrault will always be a legendary figure in local broadcast news here in the Capital Region, and across the broadcast television industry. All of us at CBS 6 were saddened to learn earlier today of Mr. Tetrault’s passing at the age of 94; he really set the tone for local news, for so many anchors and reporters in the years that followed. Our sincere condolences go out to Mrs. Tetrault and their family.”
