An Albany County Legislator says he will resign after making homophobic comments late last month, leading to widespread condemnation. Republican George Langdon of the 37th District spoke about gay relationships at a conservative gathering in Voorheesville. The speech was seen on a YouTube video shared widely on social media. Langdon issued an apology Thursday before local lawmakers and LGBTQ advocates rallied in Albany and called on him to step down. Langdon, of Selkirk, was in his first term.

In a new statement Monday, Langdon said his statements were “rash and thoughtless” and said he didn’t mean to hurt anyone. Frank Mauriello, the legislature’s minority leader, said he supports Langdon’s decision to resign, calling the comments offensive and wrong.

A legislator will be appointed to fill the open seat for the rest of the year, according to Democratic Legislature Chair Andrew Joyce. The appointment will be voted on by a majority of the legislature. A legislator elected in November will fill the rest of the unexpired term.
