Former New York state Assemblyman Richard Brodsky has died at 73. Gannett reports Brodsky is believed to have contracted coronavirus in recent days.
Brodsky, a Westchester County Democrat, served in the state Legislature from 1983 through 2010. He ran unsuccessfully for state attorney general in 2006 and 2010. After leaving office, he remained in the public eye at think tanks and as a columnist — discussing state government issues like the question of a onstitutional convention.
Brodsky was known for his wit and his feistiness, and he championed many reforms, including successfully establishing a watchdog body over the state’s secretive public authorities.
Brodsky was not afraid to criticize members of his own party, even speaking out against Governor Andrew Cuomo when Cuomo tried to steer a Moreland Act Commission investigating corruption in his administration.
