Albany County Democrats appear to have chosen Albany City Auditor Sue Rizzo in the key primary race to replace retiring Comptroller Mike Conners. Rizzo was leading Albany City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar by about 1,000 votes of the 17,000 cast Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

Conners is not seeking a seventh term. Rizzo would be the first woman elected county comptroller if she wins November’s general election. Republican David Yule awaits in the general.

Shahinfar tells WAMC he congratulates Rizzo for running a “spirited campaign” but is “respecting the process” as absentee ballots remain to be counted.
