A Bridge In His Honor

WAMC Composite Photo by Dave Lucas

A town official in the Hudson Valley is writing to New York state officials, urging them to consider naming a bridge in honor and in memory of Pete Seeger, who passed away today.

Pete Seeger employed his music in a push for a cleaner river in the 1960s (long before others took on the cause).

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner is writing to Governor Andrew Cuomo and members of the NYS Legislature, urging them to consider naming the new Tappan Zee bridge in honor and in memory of Pete Seeger: "I can't think of anything that would be more appropriate than naming the Tappan Zee Bridge for a world class leader. A world class bridge deserves to be named for a world class environmentalist who will continue to inspire people to keep the river clean."

Pete Seeger launched his Hudson River Sloop Clearwater in 1969 - the craft played an important role in the passage of laws to clean up the nation’s waters.

Clearwater  will sail on as a symbol of and testament to Pete Seeger’s great legacy, a man who made the Hudson river and all of its communities a better place.
