WAMC's Daily Sports Wrap

Well the Spurs snapped the Celtics five game winning streak...

Last night in San Antonio, Tim Duncan netted 10 and grabbed 16 boards, as the Spurs recovered after blowing a 17-point lead to beat the Celtics 87-86.  San Antonio's won nine straight.

Elsewhere, Miami got by Oklahoma City 98-93, Golden State rallied to beat Minnesota 97-94, Atlanta blasted Charlotte 120-93, Milwaukee fought off Cleveland 107-98, Toronto trounced Philadelphia 99-78, Indiana whipped Washington 109-96, Phoenix held off Utah 107-105, New Orleans downed Denver 94-92, Dallas rolled over Memphis 95-85, and Portland pounded New Jersey 101-88.

To baseball, last night in Miami, the new-look Marlins welcomed the Cardinals to town – and the defending World Series champions were anything but hospitable... David Freese's two-run single in the first was more than enough as Kyle Lohse took a no-hitter into the seventh, and the Cardinals took the 2012 stateside opener from the Marlins 4-1.

Many teams get their 2012 campaigns underway today, including Boston at Detroit, Jon Lester against Justin Verlander, and Atlanta at the New York Mets, Tommy Hanson against Johan Santana.  The Yankees open up their season tomorrow.

In other baseball news, the Mets have agreed to a $25.5 million dollar, five-year contract with pitcher Jonathon Niese.

To the NHL, Montreal skated past Tampa Bay 5-2, and Detroit dropped St. Louis 3-2 in a shootout.

In college hockey, the NCAA Frozen Four gets underway this afternoon... Union College, from Schenectady, N.Y. faces Ferris State in the first semifinal matchup, followed by top seed Boston College against Minnesota in the other semi.

In golf, play in the 2012 Masters will start later this morning.  Augusta National chairman Billy Payne says he expects the course to be ready for the first round, despite a "significant" storm that downed "several" trees and left several bunkers "completely washed out." After 1.4 inches of rain fell Tuesday, there's a 60 percent chance of more rain and thunderstorms forecasted for today.

And in college basketball news, two-time Ohio State All-American forward Jared Sullinger will forgo his final two seasons and enter the NBA draft.
