Boston, MA – The largest employer in central Massachusetts is reportedly going to cut hundreds of jobs. WAMC's Paul Tuthill reports...
UMass Memorial Healthcare is planning to eliminate up to 900 jobs - about six percent of its workforce, according to the Boston Globe.
The job cuts will come about through lay offs at the flagship Worcester hospital and by selling health service divisions, according to the newspaper, which said U-Mass Memorial Healthcare CEO John OBrien announced the plan in a memo to employees on Wednesday.
The memo cited the need to immediately cut expenses by $50 million. Patient volume is down, and the hospital expects lower reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid and eventually from commercial insurers.
