Boston, MA – A top official says he believes the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles can offset a proposed $15 million cut in the agency's budget. WAMC's Paul Tuthill reports...
Secretary of Transportation Richard Davey released a statement Thursday downplaying reports that Governor Deval Patrick's proposed budget for the 2013 fiscal year will lead to longer lines or service reductions at RMV branches.
Davey said the agency is looking at other potential revenue sources, including the sale or lease of some of its real estate holdings and by selling advertising space on its website.
The state is also encouraging people to conduct more business electronically, noting the RMV had $3 million in online transactions last year.
Davey said officials will only consider service reductions if the registry cannot generate enough revenue to offset the cut.
