Trustees: Ex-UMass President's Pay Deal is Fair

Boston, MA – University of Massachusetts trustees say the financial package for departing president Jack Wilson is in line with other large public universities. WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...

Board Chairman James Karam said last month the trustees' compensation committee would review the pay deal. Wilson is receiving his $425,000 annual presidential salary while on a year's sabbatical, and will be paid nearly triple the senior faculty average when he begins teaching next fall at UMass Lowell.

The committee announced its finding Wednesday, and also said it found salaries of current top UMass leaders are below the average at similar institutions.

The Boston Globe reported last month the agreement with Wilson was reached with the former chairman, who consulted the compensation committee in defining the terms, but wasn't required to discuss details with the full board or make the agreement public.
