Burlington, VT – In one of the largest political gatherings in Burlington in years, a caucus was held Sunday to choose one of the four Democrats running for mayor. After two rounds, two candidates had dropped out. Following the third round, there was a tie between the remaining candidates: Vermont State Senator Tim Ashe and Developer and Airport Commissioner Miro Weinberger. Burlington Free Press Staff Writer Joel Baird was at Memorial Auditorium for the nearly seven hours of voting. Baird says an issue of rules came up regarding write-in votes.

Burlington City Democratic Chair Steve Howard says there was no confusion over the rules.

The Republican candidate for Mayor Kurt Wright had wished all the Democratic candidates good luck on his Facebook page prior to the Sunday caucus. Wright says everyone was surprised by the tie.

The Democratic Executive Committee will decide tonight the party's next move. Again, the Burlington Free Press' Joel Baird.

The city Progressive Party has yet to announce any candidate. Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss, a Progressive, has not announced his plans. The election will be held on Town Meeting Day in March.
