Boston, MA – Massachusetts has been ranked the top state in the country for its energy efficiency efforts. WAMC's Paul Tuthill reports...

Massachusetts supplanted California at the top in the fifth annual scorecard from the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, a Washington DC based research group. New York, Vermont, and Connecticut all finished in the top ten.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, in a statement, said Massachusetts is proud to be a model for the nation and the world when it comes to energy efficiency.

The state, in 2008, passed legislation, called the Green Communities Act, which set aggressive goals for electricity and natural gas savings. It required investor owned utilities to pursue cost effective efficiency programs and rewarded cities and towns that meet clean energy benchmarks.
