Springfield, MA – The top elected officials in Massachusetts toured the tornado damaged sections of the state Thursday. WAMC's Paul Tuthill reports...

U.S. Senator John Kerry said he believed damage would run into the tens of millions of dollars and he was confident the disaster would qualify for federal financial assistance.

"I think that the extent of the damage, particularly to some of the larger buildings and business, is very significant," said Kerry. "I mean it looks like a blast zone in some of those areas."

Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms rolled west to east Wednesday evening, producing significant damage in at least 19 communities. Authorities said four people were killed and another 200 injured.
