The end of August used to be considered a slow season in politics, but television ads released by New Tork Governor Andrew Cuomo, and his Republican challenger Marc Molinaro, are getting heated. President Trump is set to announce his choice for a new Supreme Court justice replace the retiring Anthony Kennedy who he’s said could eventually result in the reversal of the abortion rights case Roe v. Wade. New York has had legal abortion since 1970, three years before the landmark Supreme Court ruling. But advocates, and many Democratic politicians, say it’s not enough, and it could become an issue in this year’s governor’s race.

When Democratic candidate for New York governor Cynthia Nixon called for a state Moreland Act Commission to investigate government corruption Tuesday, she was not the first to do so. Her opponent, Governor Andrew Cuomo, also requested and created a Moreland Commission to look at potential illegal activities in state government, but he disbanded it as part of a budget deal several months later.

The progressive political party the Working Families Party split up over the weekend, with some of the last remaining major unions leaving the group. WFP announced they back Cynthia Nixon for Governor, while incumbent Andrew Cuomo withdrew from consideration, saying he’s sticking with the major unions, for now.

After saying in January he would not enter the race for New York governor, Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro reconsidered. Monday, in his hometown of Tivoli, where his political career began in the 1990s, the Republican kicked off his campaign. WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne was at Tivoli Village Hall for the announcement.
