The Trump Administration on Friday extended tariffs on about 99 percent of imports. Along New York’s northern border, economist and business development officials are disappointed, but not surprised.

Last Saturday, President Donald Trump threatened to place a 100% tariff on all goods imported from Canada if that nation signed a trade agreement with China. This week Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand called on Trump to “stop illegally threatening” allies.

President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to impose 25-percent tariffs on all imported goods from Mexico and Canada. While supporters say Trump is following through on campaign pledges, the idea is being criticized along the northern border where such trade is key to economic stability.

A dispute over dairy tariff rate quotas has been settled between the U.S. and Canada.
