The United States Tennis Association will honor Althea Gibson with a statue at the U.S. Open.

The first African-American to win the U.S. Nationals singles title in 1957 will be commemorated at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The U.S. Nationals were the precursor to the U.S. Open. She won both the U.S. Nationals and Wimbledon titles in 1957 and 1958.

NBA-SCHEDULE

The Cleveland Cavaliers managed to improve to 4-2 since dealing six players before the NBA trade deadline. However, Tuesday's victory came despite surrendering 123 points to the second-worst team in the Eastern Conference.

LeBron James provided 31 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists as the Cavs knocked off the Nets, 129-123 at Cleveland. It was his 12th triple-double of the season and 67th of his career, but the Cavaliers didn't take the lead for good until Rodney Hood's three-point play put Cleveland ahead 123-121 with 40 seconds left.

George Hill added two free throws in the closing seconds and finished with a season-high 26 points. Hill and Hood were among four players acquired by Cleveland at the trade deadline.

James also became the first player in NBA history with 30,000 points, 8,000 rebounds and 8,000 assists. He averaged a triple-double in a single month for the first time in his career, but the Cavs went just 6-4 in February.

Checking out Tuesday's other NBA action:

Bradley Beal scored 21 points and Otto Porter Jr. added 17 in the Wizards' 107-104 victory at Milwaukee. Beal nailed a clutch 3-pointer and a free throw down the stretch to secure Washington's fifth win in six games.

Damian Lillard had 26 points and 12 assists in the Trail Blazers' fourth straight win, 116-99 over the Kings on Tuesday night. Jusuf Nurkic added 17 points and nine rebounds in helping Portland pull within one game of San Antonio for fourth place in the West.

The Hornets ran their winning streak to a season-high five games as Kemba Walker and Dwight Howard led a 118-103 victory over the Bulls. Walker dropped in 31 points and Howard finished with 24 on 10 of 12 shooting after returning from a first-quarter back injury.

Dwyane Wade capped his season-high, 27-point performance by hitting a jumper with 5.9 seconds left to give the Heat a 102-101 triumph over the 76ers. Wade contributed 15 points in the fourth quarter, Goran Dragic finished with 21 points and Tyler Johnson added 16 for Miami.

Lou Williams scored 25 points and the Clippers came back from 19 down in the third quarter to beat the Nuggets, 122-120. Boban Marjanovic added a season-high 18 for the Clippers, whose bench outscored the Denver reserves, 54-4 in the second half.

NBA

The Cavaliers have indefinitely banned a fan from their arena for making racial taunts at San Antonio's Patty Mills.

Security officials reviewed videotape from Sunday's game and identified the fan sitting near the court. He yelled at Mills while the Spurs guard was shooting free throws in the fourth quarter.

TOP 25 MEN'S BASKETBALL

The unranked Miami Hurricanes coughed up a 16-point, second-half lead on Tuesday before ending North Carolina's six-game winning streak.

Ja'Quan Newton drained a running 30-footer at the horn to give the Hurricanes a 91-88 victory over the ninth-ranked Tar Heels. Newton's game-winner came 4.1 seconds after Joel Berry II nailed a game-tying 3, but Miami pushed the ball upcourt for Newton's shot over Berry.

Chris Lykes scored a team-high 18 points for Miami, while Berry matched his career high with 31 points.

Meanwhile, 17th-ranked Rhode Island is a .500 team since its school-record 16-game winning streak.

James Demery scored 21 points and Taylor Funk added 17 as Saint Joseph's handed the Rams their second loss in four games, a 78-48 thrashing at Rhode Island. The Hawks racked up a 35-16 halftime lead and held the Rams to 28 percent shooting for the game.

Rhode Island went 4 for 24 from the field in the opening 14 minutes and was outscored 9-2 to end the first half.

In other top-25 finals:

Arkansas was a 91-82 winner against No. 14 Auburn behind Daniel Gafford's 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jaylen Barford chipped in 20 points and Daryl Moon added 16 while both reached the 1,000-point mark in their second seasons with the Razorbacks.

Admiral Schofield finished 24 points and No. 16 Tennessee shot 68 percent from the field in the second half of a 76-54 blowout win at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs led by eight until the Vols closed the first half on a 23-9 run.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

San Diego State senior forward Malik Pope was cleared by the school to play in Tuesday night's home game against Boise State.

The Aztecs' leading scorer and rebounder was held out of last Saturday night's game at San Jose State after his name appeared in documents that are part of a federal investigation into college basketball corruption. The documents were obtained by Yahoo Sports.

SDSU said an investigation led by associate athletic director of compliance Andy Humes found no evidence that Pope received any impermissible benefits or violated any NCAA rules.

In the men’s America East Conference UAlbany defeated Binghamton 71-54, UMBC Downed Hartford 62-53, Vermont topped Maine 74-62 and UMass Lowell beat New Hampshire 92-77.

NHL

Ryan Hartman had a memorable debut for the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.

Hartman delivered the tiebreaking goal with one minute remaining to give the Predators a wild 6-5 victory over the Jets. Paul Stastny scored with 10 minutes left to put Winnipeg ahead 5-3, his first game since being acquired from St. Louis. But Craig Smith scored 55 seconds later and Ryan Johansen tied it before Hartman put the Predators four points ahead of the second-place Jets in the NHL's Central Division.

Smith finished with two goals and Roman Josi tied a team record with five assists in Nashville's fifth straight win.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

The Capitals top the Metropolitan Division by one point over Philadelphia after Evgeny Kuznetsov scored twice in Washington's 3-2 victory against the Senators. Tom Wilson also tallied and Philipp Grubauer stopped 28 shots in helping the Capitals bounce back from Monday's 5-1 loss at Columbus.

The Devils' 3-2 win over the Penguins keeps New Jersey five points behind the Caps and puts Pittsburgh three points back. Stefan Noesen broke a 2-2 deadlock five minutes into the third period as the Devils ended the Pens' 11-game home winning streak. New Jersey forward Taylor Hall scored a power-play goal and had an assist while running his point streak to 15 games, tying a Devils record.

Rick Nash notched his first goal since joining the Bruins on Sunday, but Boston needed Charlie McAvoy's goal 68 seconds into overtime to beat the Hurricanes, 4-3. Tommy Wingels tied the game in the second period and had an assist in his first game with Boston, helping his new team get within five points of the Atlantic Division-leading Lightning.

The Maple Leafs are within four points of Tampa Bay after Jared McCann's goal at 3:46 of overtime pushed the Panthers past Toronto, 3-2. Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau (HOO'-bur-doh) put Florida ahead 2-0, but the Leafs grabbed a point on second-period goals by Dominic Moore and Zach Hyman.

Anze Kopitar scored his 27th goal of the season and the Kings completed a home-and-home sweep by topping the Golden Knights, 4-1 in Vegas. Kings netminder Jack Campbell stopped 41 shots in his second NHL start and first since 2013-14. The sweep cuts the Knights' lead in the Pacific Division to 10 points over the Sharks and puts Los Angeles third in the division, one point ahead of Anaheim.

Evander Kane donned a Sharks jersey for the first time and set up two goals while San Jose was scoring four straight in the second period of a 5-2 downing of the Oilers. Joe Pavelski had a goal and three assists in the Sharks' first win in four games.

The Wild rolled to their fifth consecutive win as Eric Staal notched his 14th career hat trick and finished with five points in an 8-3 rout of the reeling Blues. The line of Staal, Mikael Granlund and Jason Zucker combined for 14 points as Minnesota dealt St. Louis its seventh consecutive loss.

Ben Bishop picked up his fifth shutout of the season and 24th of his career by handling 37 shots in the Stars' 2-0 win over Calgary. Devin Shore and Tyler Seguin provided the goals as Dallas handed Calgary netminder Jon Gillies his first loss in six NHL games.

NHL

It's a good thing the Boston Bruins acquired forwards Rick Nash, Tommy Wingels and Brian Gionta before the NHL trade deadline.

The club says center leading goal scorer Patrice Bergeron is out with a fractured right foot suffered while blocking a shot in Saturday's loss to Toronto. An initial X-ray was negative, but a subsequent CT scan revealed the break. He will be evaluated in two weeks.

Bergeron has 27 goals and 54 points in 55 games this season.

In other NHL news:

The Penguins have signed forward Patric Hornqvist to a five-year contract extension that runs through the end of the 2022-23 season. Hornqvist was eligible for free agency on July 1 before accepting a deal that's worth $5.3 million annually. The 31-year-old Hornqvist has 17 goals and 32 points this season after helping the Pens win the last two Stanley Cups.

MLB

The Major League Baseball Players Association has filed a grievance against the Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays.

The union accuses the four teams of failing to appropriately spend revenue-sharing money to improve their ballclubs.

The four clubs ranked 20th, 25th, 27th and 28th in team payroll for their 40-man rosters last year before three of the teams dealt major pieces of their organizations. The Pirates traded Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole, The Rays moved Evan Longoria and the Marlins jettisoned NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, Dee Gordon and Christian Yelich.

MLB says the complaint has no merit, while Pirates president Frank Coonelly called the grievance "patently baseless."

In other MLB news:

A person with knowledge of the negotiations says two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum is in discussions with the Rangers on a one-year deal. Lincecum last pitched in the majors for the 2016 Angels, going 2-6 with a hefty 9.16 ERA in nine starts. He enjoyed far better success with the Giants, helping the team win three World Series and going 108-83 with two no-hitters and a 3.74 ERA.

The Seattle Mariners say pitcher Felix Hernandez is still very sore after taking a line drive off his right forearm on Monday. X-rays were negative.

First baseman Mike Napoli has agreed to a minor league contract with the Indians, pending the completion of a physical. Napoli spent 2016 with the Indians and had a major role in getting the club to the World Series.

NFL

Eagles punter Donnie Jones has announced his retirement after 14 NFL seasons.

Jones played for Seattle, Miami, St. Louis and Houston before joining Philadelphia in 2013. He set an Eagles career record for punters with 70 games played and finishes his career with the third-longest consecutive-games-played streak at 208, behind only Houston punter Shane Lecher and Dallas tight end Jason Witten.

In other NFL news:

The 49ers have signed offensive lineman Garry Gilliam to a two-year contract extension. The deal keeps Gilliam off the free-agent market next month and under contract through 2019. Gilliam's return gives the 49ers needed depth in the offseason as starting right tackle Trent Brown recovers from shoulder surgery.

Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah has been given the team's franchise tag. The Lions' first-round pick in 2013 has 44 sacks, including 12 this past season. The franchise tag means Ansah will make the average of the top five defensive ends this year unless he and the Lions can reach agreement on a long-term package by mid-July.
