basketball

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees doubled up the Angels 6-3, Baltimore beat Kansas City 9-1, Detroit edged Toronto 3-2 in 10 innings, Texas won against Houston 4-3, and it was Seattle over Cleveland 7-1.

In the National League, in a double header Pittsburgh topped the Mets 3-1 and then again in the second game 3-1, Philadelphia bested the Cubs 3-2, Cincinnati slid past St. Louis 7-6, San Diego edged Atlanta 4-3, and it was the Dodgers over Colorado 4-3.

In interleague play, Boston topped San Francisco 5-3 in 10 innings, Arizona blanked Tampa Bay 5-0, Minnesota beat Miami 6-4 in 11 innings, Washington doubled up the White Sox 10-5, and it was Milwaukee over Oakland 5-4.

Fifteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks stunned the nation, the Baseball Hall of Fame will pay tribute to baseball's role in the healing process with a new exhibit. The centerpiece of the exhibit will be the Mets jersey worn by 2016 Hall of Fame electee Mike Piazza on Sept. 21, 2001 in the first game played in New York after the attacks.  A baseball found in the rubble of the World Trade Center also will be featured, as well as the NYPD hat worn by Mets manager Bobby Valentine and the FDNY hat worn by Mets pitcher John Franco. The exhibit opens June 18 and runs through the end of the year.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Minnesota beat Phoenix 89-81 and it was the Sparks over the Liberty 100-77.

NBA:

Former NBA center and Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Sean Rooks has died at 46. Rooks played 12 seasons after being selected in the second round of the NBA draft by Dallas in 1992, averaging 6.2 points in 749 games with seven teams. Rooks spent the past two years working as an assistant on Brett Brown's staff in Philadelphia.

PGA:

Tiger Woods will not play in the U.S. Open next week at Oakmont as he recovers from back surgery, saying on his website that he's not physically ready to play. Woods will have missed three of the last six U.S. Opens since winning the second major of the year three times. He has not played since a tie for 10th in the Wyndham Championship in August.

Copa America:

The United States is 1-1 through two games in Copa America. Clint Dempsey had a goal and two assists as the Americans thumped Costa Rica 4-0. Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood and Graham Zusi also scored as the U.S. moved into prime position to grab one of two spots in the knockout round coming out of Group A.

NFL:

Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame defensive end Bruce Smith acknowledges not a day goes by in which he's not experiencing some form of pain. At 52, the NFL's career sacks leader also has trouble with his memory, saying his wife informs him there are things he tends to forget. Smith shared those revelations while attending former teammate Jim Kelly's charitable golf tournament outside of Buffalo this week.  At a time when NFL safety concerns are attracting headlines, it's difficult for Smith to ignore the toll playing 299 games — including playoffs — and registering 200 sacks took on his 6-foot-4, 262-pound body. And yet, if he could go back, Smith says he would do it all over again for the opportunity to play the sport he grew up loving.

A Norwalk, Connecticut, advertising company has sued PepsiCo Inc. in New York over a Super Bowl commercial, saying its design ideas were stolen. Betty Advertising filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Manhattan federal court. It accuses the beverage company of stealing its human jukebox concept of a hero character going from room to room, with the style of music changing in each. PepsiCo is based in Purchase, New York. It says it plans to "vigorously defend" itself against a meritless lawsuit. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. It says PepsiCo listened to a pitch of its "All Kinds/Living Jukebox" concept last November but rejected its idea. The lawsuit says PepsiCo then infringed on Betty Inc.'s copyrighted concepts as it created the commercial that led into this year's PepsiCo Super Bowl halftime show.

Media:

"Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie says she's pregnant and will be skipping the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro because of the Zika virus. Guthrie made the announcement on the NBC program Tuesday morning. She cited doctors' advice in deciding to skip the Olympics. NBC had announced in April that Guthrie would co-host the opening ceremony of the Rio Games on Aug. 5. Zika is known to cause birth defects, including microcephaly, in which the baby's head is smaller than expected because the brain hasn't developed properly. The virus is now in 60 countries, with Olympic host Brazil the hardest-hit nation. Guthrie says her second child with husband Michael Feldman is due in December. The couple's first child, a girl, was born in August 2014.

Boxing:

A length of street next to New York's Madison Square Garden is being temporarily renamed Muhammad Ali Way to honor the late boxing legend. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday that West 33rd Street adjacent to the arena will be temporarily named for Ali. The Democratic mayor says Ali "never backed down from a fight in or outside the ring." The 74-year-old three-time heavyweight champion was from Louisville, Kentucky. He died Friday in Phoenix. Ali fought eight times at the Garden. The most famous bout was the Fight of the Century against Joe Frazier in 1971. Temporary street signs are posted for a few days. A public plaza near Madison Square Garden was given the permanent designation Joe Louis Plaza in 1984. Louis was another legendary fighter. He died in 1981.
