Sports Report: Cowboys Cap Monday Night Game With 54-Yard Field Goal

NFL:

On Monday Night Football, Dan Bailey hit a 54-yard field goal with nine seconds left to cap a wild finish in the Dallas Cowboys' 19-16 win at Washington. The Cowboys broke a 9-9 tie on Darren McFadden's six-yard touchdown run with 1:14 remaining, but Washington knotted the score on Kirk Cousins' 28-yard scoring strike to DeSean Jackson before Bailey's kick left Dallas 4-8. The Cowboys are within one game of Washington, Philadelphia and the New York Giants for the NFC East lead.

The NFL Players Association has told a federal appeals court that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was making a "sweeping grab for power" in the "Deflategate" controversy and a judge was right to reject his handling of the scandal. Lawyers for the union made the claim in papers filed yesterday with a Manhattan appeals court. A three-judge panel will hear oral arguments in March.

Former NFL defensive end Hugh Douglas has settled a lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend over an alleged assault at a Connecticut hotel in 2013. A trial was scheduled to begin yesterday in federal court in New Haven, but a document filed Friday says the case was settled. Terms weren't disclosed.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will suit up and throw outdoors Wednesday as he takes his first big step back from a left foot injury that has had sidelined him since mid-November. However, Denver coach Gary Kubiak says he doesn't expect Manning to participate in Wednesday's practice. Brock Osweiler will start Sunday's game against the Raiders.

NBA:

In the NBA, Dallas beat New York 104-97, Boston topped New Orleans 111-93, Charlotte defeated Detroit 104-84, San Antonio humiliated Philadelphia 119-68, Toronto won against the Lakers 102-93, the Clipppers bested Minnesota 110-106, Phoenix defeated Chicago 103-101, Washington topped Miami 114-103, and it was Milwaukee over Portland 90-88.

Over in Indianapolis, Colts coach Chuck Pagano says he expects quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to play this weekend against Jacksonville despite a fractured rib and a sore neck. The 40-year-old Hasselbeck was injured in Sunday night's 45-10 loss at Pittsburgh, his third straight game since replacing the injured Andrew Luck as the starter. Luck has been throwing at practice as he recovers from a lacerated kidney and partially torn abdominal muscle, but he's not quite ready to return yet.

NHL:

In the NHL, Nashville beat Boston 3-2, Vancouver topped Buffalo 5-2, and it was Colorado over Minnesota in overtime 2-1.

NCAA:

UConn remains the top team in The Associated Press women's basketball poll after three more victories this past week. The Huskies again received all 32 votes yesterday from a national media panel after beating Chattanooga, DePaul and Notre Dame. Both the Blue Demons and the Irish stayed within one possession of the Huskies at the half before UConn broke the game open.

MLB:

A proposed trade that would bring flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman to the Los Angeles Dodgers appears to be on hold.

Yahoo Sports is reporting that police in Davie, Florida, investigated an accusation of domestic violence involving the Cincinnati Reds pitcher. Yahoo reported more than a dozen police officers responded to Chapman's home in Florida on Oct. 30 without an arrest due to conflicting stories and a lack of cooperation. Police said they could not provide a copy of the police report on Monday night, and Chapman's lawyer denied the allegations in the Yahoo report.

A person familiar with the Reds-Dodgers deal told The Associated Press the trade would not be finalized until after the teams exchanged medical records. Major League Baseball's Statcast computer system shows that Chapman threw the 62 fastest pitches in the big leagues this year, ranging from 103.92 mph to 102.36 mph.

The Boston Red Sox have acquired right-hander Carson Smith and lefty Roenis Elias from the Seattle Mariners for left-hander Wade Miley and reliever Jonathan Aro in the first trade announced at the winter meetings. The Red Sox had one of the worst bullpens in baseball last year as they finished last in the AL East.

Commissioner Rob Manfred has named Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. his special adviser on youth programs and outreach.

The MLB players' association has filed a grievance challenging the Washington Nationals' decision to hand reliever Jonathan Papelbon a four-game suspension without pay for his dugout fight with teammate Bryce Harper late last season. The union will seek to recover $284,153 of Papelbon's salary when the grievance is heard.

Pistorius:

A South African judge has granted bail to Oscar Pistorius, pending sentencing for his murder conviction.

The country's Supreme Court of Appeal convicted him on Thursday of murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, overturning a lower court's conviction of the lesser crime of manslaughter. The appeals court then said the double-amputee Olympian should be sentenced by the lower court.

Judge Aubrey Ledwaba of the trial court granted Pistorius bail of $692 and extended his house arrest until his sentencing hearing, which he set for April 18. The judge said Pistorius will be placed under electronic monitoring and may only leave his uncle's home between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m. T

Pistorius' chief defense lawyer, Barry Roux, said his client plans to appeal his conviction to the Constitutional Court.

Fantasy Sports:

A state Assembly gambling panel today takes up the legality of daily fantasy sports web sites such as FanDuel and DraftKings. Today's hearing comes as Attorney General Eric Schneiderman makes his case the sites are essentially illegal gambling operations. He is seeking an injunction to keep them from operating in New York.
