Sports Report: Rodgers Throws 61-Yard TD With No Time Left To Win

Aaron Rodgers

NFL:

On Thursday Night Football, Aaron Rodgers threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Richard Rodgers with no time left to give the Green Bay Packers a stunning 27-23 victory over the Detroit Lions.

On Sunday at 1, the Jets face off against the Giants, Houston is in Buffalo, and then at 4:25 Philadelphia will see the Patriots in New England.

Darrelle Revis was sidelined again for practice as he recovers from a concussion and it appears unlikely that the New York Jets cornerback will play against the Giants on Sunday. Revis was injured at Houston on November 22nd and has not practiced or played since.

Coldplay is headlining the Super Bowl halftime show. The British rock band, which is releasing a new album Friday, will perform during halftime of the Super Bowl on Feb. 7. That's according to a spokesperson for Pepsi, which is sponsoring the halftime show.

— The Rams' Nick Foles will start at quarterback for the second straight week after Case Keenum was not cleared to play as he recovers from a concussion. Coach Jeff Fisher says that if Keenum is cleared on Friday, he would be the backup against the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Foles threw three interceptions with one of them returned for a touchdown, in a loss at Cincinnati last week.

— Falcons running back Devonta Freeman took all the reps with the first team in practice in preparation for meeting Tampa Bay this week. Freeman sat out last week's loss to Cincinnati with a concussion.

NBA:

In the NBA, Boston won against Sacramento 114-97, Orlando beat Utah 103-94, San Antonio crushed Memphis 103-83, Portland defeated Indiana 123-111, Denver trumped Toronto 106-105, and it was Miami over Oklahoma City 97-95.

NHL:

In the NHL, Colorado skated past the Rangers 2-1, New Jersey crushed Carolina 5-1, Washington edged Montreal 3-2, Florida edged Nashville 2-1, Minnesota blanked Toronto 1-0, Dallas doubled up Vancouver 4-2, and it was Ottawa over Chicago in overtime 4-3.

— Patrick Kane has tied Chicago great Bobby Hull's franchise record by scoring at least one point in 21 straight games. Kane had a goal and two assists, but it wasn't enough as the Blackhawks fell to Ottawa 4-3 in overtime. Mike Hoffman scored his second goal of the game 30 seconds into overtime to give the Senators the win.

NCAA:

Legendary Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was denied his appeal of a nine-game suspension by the NCAA, which did rule the suspension could start now. The change means the 71-year-old Boeheim will now miss six non-conference games and only three ACC games, returning for North Carolina on Jan. 9. Assistant coach Mike Hopkins will lead No. 14 Syracuse on Saturday at Georgetown.

A person with direct knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that Arizona State offensive coordinator Mike Norvell will be the new head football coach at Memphis. University President Dr. M. David Rudd wrote on Twitter that he hired a "great football coach" who would be introduced at a news conference Friday.

Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw says forward Brianna Turner will be out several weeks as she tries to rehabilitate an injured right shoulder so she can avoid season-ending surgery. McGraw says a decision on whether forward Taya Reimer can play against top-ranked Connecticut will likely be made before the game tomorrow.

MLB:

The New York Mets and right-hander Jim Henderson have agreed to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training. The 33-year reliever spent last season in the Milwaukee Brewers' minor league system, the majority of the year with Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Golf:

Paul Casey, Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson shot 6-under 66s to share the lead after the first round of the 18-man Hero World Challenge. Defending champion Jordan Spieth made a hole-in-one on his second hole and was in the large group at 67 that included Bubba Watson and Adam Scott.

— Tiger Woods says he has a "fantastic" relationship with his ex-wife and he has taken steps to explain to his two children what happened to their marriage.

In an extensive interview with Time magazine, Woods also says he still wants to play golf at the highest level, though he is resigned that it might not happen if the nerve damage in his back doesn't allow for it.

Woods says he has told 8-year-old Sam and 6-year-old Charlie that his parents don't live in the same house because "Daddy made some mistakes."

FIFA:

FIFA vice presidents Juan Angel Napout and Alfredo Hawit have been arrested as part of the U.S. Department of Justice's bribery case that has rocked soccer's governing body. According to the Swiss justice ministry, both men have opposed their extradition to the United States. The United States is accusing the two of accepting bribes of millions of dollars linked to marketing rights for Copa America and World Cup qualifying matches. They were among 16 more people who have been indicted in the wide-ranging U.S. corruption investigation.

NCAA - Coaches:

The University of Miami has called a news conference for Friday to introduce its new head football coach. The school hasn't said who it is, but a person with knowledge of the negotiations has told The Associated Press Mark Richt has agreed to terms. The longtime Georgia coach departed this week after 15-years with the Bulldogs. Richt won 145 games at Georgia.

Elsewhere:

— Missouri has promoted defensive coordinator Barry Odom to replace the retiring Gary Pinkel as head coach. Odom had agreed in principle to a five-year deal that will need to be approved by the school's board of curators next week. The 39-year-old Odom will be formally introduced Friday at a news conference.

— A person with direct knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that Arizona State offensive coordinator Mike Norvell will be the new head football coach at Memphis. University President Dr. M. David Rudd wrote on Twitter that he hired a "great football coach" who would be introduced at a news conference Friday. The 34-year-old Norvell replaces Justin Fuente, who was hired by Virginia Tech.

— D.J. Durkin has taken over as the new football coach at Maryland. The 37-year old says he will not continue his defensive coordinator duties at Michigan in its upcoming bowl game. He plans to devote his time to recruiting and assembling his staff at Maryland.
