Sports Report: Yankees Start Postseason Tonight Against Astros... Minus CC Sabathia

AP

NFL:

In the NFL, Seattle topped Detroit 13-10.

The New York Jets have signed wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins to the practice squad, and released wide receiver-kick returner Walter Powell from the practice squad. Thompkins was signed by New England as an undrafted free agent out of Cincinnati in 2013 and he caught 32 passes for 466 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie. Powell had been with the Jets since last season, when New York claimed him off waivers from Arizona.

A Missouri judge has continued until next month the criminal case against New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson, accused of resisting arrest and traffic counts for a summer police chase in suburban St. Louis.

A court hearing was cancelled Monday. Richardson was not there. St. Charles County Associate Circuit Judge Norman Steimel III continued the case until November 9th. Richardson sat out the first four games this season as part of a suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The former University of Missouri star lives in O'Fallon, Missouri, in the offseason. He was arrested July 14th after allegedly driving his 2014 Bentley up to 143 mph with a 12-year-old relative in the car. Officers allegedly found a loaded handgun under a floor mat and detected a marijuana odor.

Giants:

The New York Giants are planning to place tight end Daniel Fells on injured reserve after discovering that he has a staph infection. The Giants announced their plans Monday. Fells has been bothered by an ankle injury in recent weeks and missed Sunday's win over the Buffalo Bills. In evaluating the injury, it was discovered that he has a staph infection, which requires treatment.  With tight end Jerome Cunningham sidelined with a knee injury, the Giants signed Will Tye off their practice squad Saturday.

MLB:

Postseason baseball starts up again tonight when the Yankees take on the Astros in New York at 8 p.m. in the AL Wild Card game.

The Yankees stumbled into home-field advantage in the AL wild-card game, falling to the Baltimore Orioles 9-4 Sunday after a loss by Houston made the outcome meaningless. New York will enter Tuesday's winner-take-all game against the Astros with little positive momentum after being swept in three games by Baltimore and losing six of their final seven regular-season games. The Yankees fell behind 7-1 in the fifth inning and stranded 11 runners.

Skipper Matt Williams and his coaching staff have been dismissed by the Washington Nationals after two seasons, one year after he was named NL Manager of the Year. Williams guided the Nats to the NL East title in 2014, and the ballclub was the favorite to win the World Series this season before finishing 83-79 and seven games behind the Mets. General manager Mike Rizzo says he plans to interview managerial candidates with "diverse backgrounds, diverse experiences and diverse skill sets."

New York Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia will miss the postseason after checking into an alcohol rehab center. The 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner said he took the step to receive the care he needs and become a better person. Sabathia was 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA this year after posting a 5.28 earned run average in just eight starts for the 2014 Yanks.

Former stars Marty Marion and Bucky Walters are among 10 candidates from the earlier days of baseball who will be considered for the Hall of Fame. The Hall on Monday announced the Pre-Integration Era ballot. A 16-member panel will decide on Dec. 7 during the winter meetings in Nashville, Tennessee, with a three-quarters vote needed for election.

Joining Marion and Walters on the ballot are Doc Adams, Sam Breadon, Bill Dahlen, Wes Ferrell, Garry Herrmann, Frank McCormick, Harry Stovey and Chris von der Ahe. All of them are deceased. The candidates made their greatest contributions to the game before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947.

Marion was the 1944 NL MVP and a top-fielding shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals. Walters compiled a 198-160 career record and the 1939 NL MVP with Cincinnati. Adams played for the acclaimed Knickerbocker Base Ball Club in 1845 and later helped establish the shortstop position.

NBA:

In NBA preseason play, Sacramento bested Portland in overtime 109-105 and it was Golden State over Toronto 95-87.

The Brooklyn Nets lost their preseason opener Monday night to Turkey's Fenerbahce Ulker, which got 18 points from former NBA lottery pick Jan Vesely in a 101-96 victory. Brook Lopez scored 18 points for the Nets and Wayne Ellington added 16. With a big crowd of fans cheering them on, the Istanbul team improved to 2-2 all-time against NBA clubs. Bogdan Bogdanovic, a 2014 Phoenix Suns draft pick, added 17 points, and another former NBA player, Gigi Datome, had 16.

NCAAF:

Syracuse is expected to have freshman quarterback Eric Dungey and hybrid back Ervin Philips back in the lineup on Saturday at South Florida. Coach Scott Shafer says both players are "ready to go" in an interview posted Monday on the school's website.

Dungey was injured last month in a jarring helmet-to-helmet hit against Central Michigan. Philips underwent knee surgery for a slight tear and has missed three games.

Dungey took over as starting quarterback after senior Terrel Hunt suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the season opener against Rhode Island. Dungey did not play in the Orange's last game, a loss to then-No. 8 LSU last month, because of a head injury. Syracuse is coming off a bye week.

Two University of Rhode Island football players have been arrested for an alleged assault on several campus fraternity members. Nineteen-year-old Barrett Lyons, of Belmont, Massachusetts, and 20-year-old Michael LeBlanc, of Charlton, Massachusetts, are both charged with assault and disorderly conduct. Police say three fraternity brothers were treated at a hospital for broken noses, lacerations and possible broken jaws.

NHL:

A prosecutor says an upstate New York woman was slain in a murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by her husband, a former professional hockey player. Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker made the accusation Monday during a bail hearing for 37-year-old Thomas Clayton, who is charged with second-degree murder. His 35-year-old wife, Kelley, was found dead September 29th in the couple's home in rural Caton, on the Pennsylvania border.

Authorities over the weekend announced they had also charged 44-year-old Michael Beard of Elmira with second-degree murder. He is an acquaintance of Thomas Clayton's. It wasn't immediately clear if he has an attorney. Thomas Clayton's lawyer says his client is innocent. Prosecutors haven't said how Kelley Clayton died or who actually carried out the slaying. Clayton played for Elmira's minor league hockey team.

The Boston Bruins have put captain Zdeno Chara on the injured reserve list for an upper body injury suffered in the team's exhibition game against the New York Rangers. The Bruins made the move retroactive to September 24, meaning Chara could be back on the active roster when the Bruins open their season.
