A person with knowledge of the hiring tells The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that New Jersey general manager Ray Shero has reached into his ties with the Pittsburgh Penguins to pick the Devils' next head coach, John Hynes. Shero has chosen the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coach to run the once-proud team that has failed to make the playoffs the past three seasons.
NBA:
A person familiar with the hiring tells The Associated Press that Fred Hoiberg is leaving Iowa State to become the new head coach of the Chicago Bulls. Hoiberg was 115-56 with the Cyclones, including four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles. He had long been rumored as the replacement for Tom Thibodeau (THIH'-boh-doh), who was fired last week after five seasons in Chicago.
Soccer:
Today, the New York Cosmos will become the first U.S. professional team to play in Cuba since Presidents Raul Castro and Barack Obama announced they were re-establishing diplomatic relations. Cuban officials say the friendly match against Cuba's national team is a sign of soccer's growing popularity on the baseball-obsessed island, and an important step in the normalization of the relationship between the U.S. and Cuba.
WNBA:
Isiah Thomas' partial ownership petition for the New York Liberty is being vetted by a committee of owners from the WNBA's Board of Governors. Thomas had an unsuccessful stint as coach and president of the New York Knicks from December 2003 to April 2008. After being fired as coach, he remained with the team in an unspecified role, even after a lawsuit brought by former team employee Anucha Browne Sanders cost Madison Square Garden $11.5 million in a settlement.
Tennis:
Serena Williams has reached the French Open quarterfinals, but defending champ Maria Sharapova was beaten by 13th seed Lucie Safarova, 7-6, 6-3. No. 21 Garbine Muguruza, Sara Errani and Alison Van Uytvanck and reached the quarters, and Timea Bacsinszky eliminated No. 4 Petra Kvitova. Winners on the men's side were top seed Novak Djokovic, nine-time champion Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Roger Federer, along with third seed Andy Murray and No. 7 David Ferrer.
