Sports Report: Rockets Advance To Western Conference Finals

basketball

NHL:

In the NHL playoffs, Anaheim beat Chicago 4-1 to take a 1-0 series lead.

Sidney Crosby got the better of Alex Ovechkin once again. Crosby had a goal and an assist as Canada dominated Russia 6-1 to win the ice hockey world championship. It was the 25th world title for the Canadians, and their first since 2007. They scored 66 goals in winning all 10 of their tournament games. Claude Giroux and Tyler Ennis also had a goal and an assist each. Mike Smith was only called on to make 10 saves as the Canadians outshot Russia 38-11.

Connor Hellebuyck made 39 saves to lead the United States to a 3-0 win over the host Czech Republic in the bronze medal game.

NBA:

In the NBA playoffs, Houston bested the Clippers 113-100 to win the series 4-3 in Game 7. The Rockets will play Golden State in the Western Conference finals.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Kansas City blanked the Yankees 6-0, Seattle shut out Boston 5-0, Houston doubled up Toronto 4-2, Baltimore topped the Angels 3-0, Texas won against Cleveland 5-1, Tampa Bay crumpled Minnesota 11-3, and it was the White Sox over Oakland 7-3.

In the National League, the Mets bested Milwaukee 5-1, Philadelphia shut out Arizona 6-0, Pittsburgh blanked the Cubs 3-0, San Francisco edged Cincinnati 7-8, Atlanta shut out Miami 6-0, the Dodgers slid past Colorado 1-0, and it was Washington over San Diego 10-5.

In the interleague, St. Louis beat Detroit 2-1.

NCAA:

On Saturday, UAlbany fell to Notre Dame 14-10.

Olympics:

A new round of public hearings gets underway this week on Boston's embattled bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. Boston City Council President Bill Linehan is chair of the Special Committee on the 2024 Olympics. He says the panel's next hearing will take place this morning at City Hall.

Sailing:

The competitors in the Volvo Ocean Race have departed Newport heading for Portugal. The six sailing teams in the four-ocean, 45,000-mile race set out yesterday in light 10-knot winds for the seventh leg of the global race. The teams arrived in Newport over a week ago from Brazil.

Boston Marathon:

The jury that imposed the death sentence on Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev emphatically rejected the main defense argument to spare his life -- that he was led down the path to terrorism by his big brother. Jurors also say there was a lack of remorse. The decision sets the stage for what could be the nation's first execution of a terrorist in the post-9/11 era -- but that could still be years of appeals away.

PGA:

Rory McIlroy is the first two-time winner of the Wells Fargo Championship following a dominating seven-shot victory over Webb Simpson and Patrick Rodgers.

The top-ranked McIlory followed Saturday's 61 with a 3-under 69 to finish at 21-under 267, shattering the tournament record by five strokes.

It is McIlroy's second victory in the past three weeks, and his 11th on the PGA Tour. He won the Match Play Championship this month in San Francisco.

He has six top-10 finishes in his last eight PGA Tour starts.

Rodgers finished with a 68, and Simpson shot 69.

LPGA:

Minjee Lee owned a four-stroke lead over Alison Lee when the final round of the LPGA Tour's Kingsmill Championship was halted by darkness.

Minjee Lee played a five-hole stretch in 5 under, capping it with an easgle on 15. The 18-year-old Australian was on the par-4 16th when the horn sounded.

The final round was marred by a two-hour rain delay that will force play to resume this morning.

Tennis:

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic has beaten Roger Federer 6-4, 6-3 to claim his fourth Italian Open title. Federer has never captured the tournament. Djokovic has won 22 straight matches. Maria Sharapova rallied to beat 10th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to win her third Italian Open title.

Former doubles tennis champion Bob Hewitt has testified at his sentencing hearing in a South African court after being convicted of rape and sexual assault. The 75-year-old Hewitt told the court today that he's in poor health and has received anonymous threatening letters, warning of possible assault in prison. A judge found Hewitt guilty of raping and sexually assaulting three minors in the 1980s and 1990s.
