Sports Report: Seattle RB Marshawn Lynch, "I'm Just Here So I Won't Get Fined"

NBA:

In the NBA, Toronto beat Indiana 104-91, Cleveland topped Detroit 103-95, Milwaukee bested Miami 109-102, Memphis won against Dallas 109-90, Chicago squeaked by Golden State in overtime 113-111, and it was Washington over the Lakers 98-92.

NHL:

Over on the ice, the Islanders bested the Rangers 4-1, Philadelphia topped Arizona in a shootout 4-3, Pittsburgh edged Winnipeg 5-3, Calgary won against Buffalo 4-1, Carolina doubled up Tampa Bay 4-2, Montreal skated by Dallas 3-2, Columbus edged Washington 4-3, Detroit beat Florida 5-4, Minnesota beat Edmonton 2-1, and it was Anaheim over Vancouver 4-0.

Martin Brodeur has made his final NHL save. The NHL's all-time leader in wins and shutouts by a goaltender will formally announce his retirement at a news conference Thursday and discuss his new front office position with the St. Louis Blues.

Brodeur wrapped up a 22-year career with St. Louis after signing as a free agent on Dec. 2. He was 3-3-0, with his final victory coming in a 3-0 shutout over Colorado on Dec. 29.

He spent his first 21 seasons with the New Jersey Devils, winning three Stanley Cups and four Vezina trophies as the league's top netminder.

The Montreal native was 691-397-176 with a 2.24 goals-against average, .912 save percentage and 125 shutouts in 1,266 career appearances.

NCAA:

A jury has convicted two ex-Vanderbilt football players of raping a former student. The jury deliberated for three hours before rejecting claims that Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey were too drunk to know what they were doing and that a college culture of binge drinking and promiscuous sex should be blamed for the attack. They face decades in prison when they are sentenced March 6.

NFL:

Super Bowl media day offered little in the way of substance as the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots fielded questions in Phoenix. Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch, in order to abide by NFL rules, took part in the festivities for five minutes. He set a timer on his phone and answered reporters’ questions with only one phrase, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined.”

The New England Patriots are receiving support at a time of controversy from an unlikely location: New York's City Hall. Mayor Bill de Blasio grew up in Massachusetts and remains loyal to the Patriots. He says he believes the team did not deliberately under-inflate footballs in the AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Australian Open:

It will be top seed Serena Williams against fellow American Madison Keys in the Australian Open women's semifinals. Williams cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 rout of No. 11 Dominika Cibulkova after Keys eliminated Venus Williams 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Defending men's champion and fourth seed Stan Wawrinka advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 win over U.S. Open runner-up Kei Nishikori.

GOLF:

Tiger Woods is in Scottsdale, Arizona, for this weekend's Phoenix Open, his first event of the year. While meeting reporters he talked about how he lost a front tooth recently when in Italy to celebrate girlfriend Lindsey Vonn's breaking of a World Cup Alpine skiing record.

He described how a videographer stood up in front of him and hit him in the mouth, chipping one tooth and knocking out another. A mask he was wearing was covered in blood. He has since had the teeth replaced.
