Boston One Win Away From World Series, Nets Retire Kidd's Jersey

In baseball, Mike Napoli homered and the Red Sox held off Detroit 4-3 to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series.

Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera had a rough night. He was thrown out at the plate in the first inning, halting an early Detroit rally. Then he hit into a double play against with runners at the corners in the seventh. The Tigers scored a run on the grounder, but it was a trade-off the Red Sox were willing to make. Detroit never scored again.

The Red Sox now need to just win one game at Fenway Park to go the World Series.

Game 6 is Saturday. It's Max Scherzer against Boston's Clay Buchholz.

And tonight is also Game 6 of the National League Championship Series.  St. Louis leads the Dodgers 3-2.

In the NFL, Seattle beat Arizona 34-22. Russell Wilson threw for three touchdowns and Marshawn Lynch rushed for 91 yards.

In college football, No. 10 Miami managed a 27-23 victory North Carolina.

Moving over to hockey, the NY Islanders beat Edmonton 3-2. Vancouver blanked Buffalo 3-0. It was Boston over Florida 3-2. Carolina passed Toronto 3-2. Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia 4-1. Montreal topped Columbus 5-3. Tampa Bay edged Minnesota 3-1. Ottawa took New Jersey 5-2. Los Angeles defeated Nashville 2-1 in a shootout. St. Louis bested Chicago 3-2 in a shootout. Dallas edged ahead of San Jose 4-3 in a shootout and Detroit doubled up Colorado 4-2.

Checking NBA preseason action it was New York over Washington 98-89. Philadelphia fell to Charlotte 110-84. Cleveland won against Detroit 96-84. San Antonio beat Atlanta 106-104. Brooklyn defeated Miami 86-62. New Orleans beat Oklahoma City 105-102 and Sacramento topped Phoenix 107-90.

Finally, the Brooklyn Nets retired Jason Kidd's No. 5 jersey to the rafters.
