wikipedia.org

MLB:

Game 1 of the World Series begins tonight. The San Francisco Giants take on the Kansas City Royals at 8 p.m. on Fox. James Shields takes the mound for the Royals against the Giant’s Madison Bumgarner.

The oldest surviving former Boston Red Sox player has died at the age of 96. The team says Lou Lucier had a stroke earlier this month and died on Saturday. Lucier was a right-handed pitcher. He played parts of three major league seasons during World War II with the Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. The Northbridge, Massachusetts, native was 3-5 with a 3.81 ERA in 33 games.

NFL:

The Pittsburgh Steelers scored three touchdowns over the final 87 seconds of the first half and pulled out a 30-23 win over Houston to improve to 4-3. The Steelers took advantage of two Houston turnovers while Ben Roethlisberger sandwiched two scoring passes around receiver Antonio Brown's option pass for a TD. Ryan Fitzpatrick had 262 passing yards for the Texans, who led 13-0 in the second quarter before falling to 3-4.

Olympics:

Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Thokozile Masipa delivered the ruling today after reviewing prosecution arguments for a tough sentence as well as the defense case for a more lenient punishment for the double-amputee Olympic runner.

Pistorius killed Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year, shooting her through a closed toilet door in his home. Pistorius testified that the shooting was an accident after mistaking his girlfriend for a nighttime intruder.

The judge convicted him of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, but acquitted him of murder.

NHL:

Over on the ice in the NHL, Edmonton edged Tampa Bay 3-2 for its first win of the regular season.

The NHL has suspended Slava Voynov indefinitely after the Los Angeles Kings defenseman was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. Police say Voynov was booked and released after his arrest early Monday morning at a Torrance hospital on suspicion of corporal injury to a spouse. The Kings issued a statement saying they support the league's decision and will take appropriate action throughout the legal proceedings and the NHL investigation.

Several members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team are returning to the scene of their greatest triumph. They'll take part in a Miracle on Ice Fantasy Camp, which comes to Lake Placid for a five-day run starting March 29th. Attendees will skate with, be coached by and receive instruction from the likes of Mike Eruzione, Neal Broten, Dave Christian, John Harrington, Steve Janaszak, Ken Morrow, Mike Ramsey and Buzz Schneider.
