MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, the New York Yankees beat Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers 2-1 last night, taking the first of three straight matchups against Detroit's Cy Young Award winners. Brandon McCarthy won his fourth straight start with a gritty effort. Brian McCann had an RBI single, and Jacoby Ellsbury a sacrifice fly in the third. Elsewhere the White Sox defeated Detroit 5-3 in just 6 due to rain, and Oakland topped Tampa Bay 3-2 in 10. The Red Sox had a day off.
In the National League, the San Francisco Giants beat the New York Mets 4-3. Pablo Sandoval drove in three runs with three hits, including an RBI double with two outs in the ninth inning. The Giants took three of four at Citi Field. The Mets lost a home series for the first time since June 10th-12th against Milwaukee.
In interleague play, Baltimore beat Washington 7-3, Cleveland bested Cincinnati 7-1, and it was the Angels over the Dodgers 5-0.
NFL:
New York Giants running back David Wilson's NFL career is over because of a back injury. The 23-year-old was told by doctors yesterday that he risked more serious problems if he kept playing. He underwent fusion surgery to repair vertebrae and a herniated disk in his neck in January. At practice last Tuesday, he caught a pass and ran with his head down into the back of an offensive lineman, a hit that caused numbness in his hands and lower extremities.
Geno Smith will start over Michael Vick at quarterback, as expected, in the New York Jets' preseason opener Thursday night against the Indianapolis Colts. Coach Rex Ryan made the announcement, which came as no surprise, after practice yesterday. Smith is looking to retain the starting job in his second season.
The Cincinnati Bengals have made Andy Dalton one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. Dalton has signed a six-year extension after passing for more than 3,000 yards in each of his three NFL seasons. Multiple reports say the contract is worth up to $115 million.
Bill Belichick says the Washington Redskins were almost his "second home" during his first NFL season as a low-level assistant with the Baltimore Colts. It seems Ted Marchibroda didn't change a thing after going from Redskins offensive coordinator to Colts head coach in 1975, so Belichick was put in a charge of whiting-out 'Washington Redskins' and typing in 'Baltimore Colts' on every page of the playbook. Belichick gets a look at the modern-day Redskins this week.
Golf:
The agent for Tiger Woods says it's too early for doctors to decide whether the 14-time major champion can compete in the PGA Championship at Valhalla this week. Woods withdrew from the Bridgestone Invitational Sunday after jarring his surgically-repaired back while playing a shot on the par-5 second hole. The Bridgestone Invitational was only his third tournament since returning from a three-month absence following back surgery in March.
