Sports Report: Judge Rules Against Donald Sterling's Block Of Clippers Sale

NBA:

A judge has ruled against Donald Sterling in his attempt to block the record-breaking $2 billion sale of the Los Angeles Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Judge Michael Levanas sided with Sterling's estranged wife in the case that arose after the 80-year-old billionaire was banned by the league for making offensive remarks about blacks. Sterling can still fight the decision through the appeals process, but an unusual provision of the ruling bars him from seeking a court-ordered delay of the sale as he appeals.

MLB:

To baseball, where in the American League, Melky Cabrera homered from both sides of the plate and had five RBIs, while Ryan Goins went 4-for-5 with four ribbies in Toronto's 14-1 laugher at Boston. R.A. Dickey pitched the Blue Jays to their third straight win, yielding just a run and three hits while striking out 10 in seven innings. The Texas Rangers beat the New York Yankees 4-2 last night. Yu Darvish struck out eight in seven innings for his 10th victory, and J.P. Arencibia had a tiebreaking two-run single for the Rangers. Brett Gardner homered twice and Derek Jeter had three hits off Darvish, who threw 80 of his 108 pitches for strikes five days after losing a rain-shortened game in New York.

Elsewhere Houston trumped Oakland 7-3.

In the National League, the Mets topped Philadelphia 7-1, Atlanta blanked San Diego 2-0, Arizona edged Cincinnati 2-1 in 15, Miami beat Washington 7-6, the Cubs defeated Colorado 4-1, and Pittsburgh shut out San Francisco 5-0.

In the interleague play, Tampa Bay beat Milwaukee 2-1.

Horse Racing:

R Free Roll took an early lead on a sloppy track and went on to win the $200,000 Grade 2 Honorable Miss Handicap by 1 1/4 lengths on a rainy Monday at Saratoga Race Course.

Making her 17th start but just the second outside of her native Florida, the 4-year-old daughter of Rockport Harbor was never challenged under jockey Paco Lopez. She finished the six furlongs in 1:10.12.

R Free Roll paid $15, $5.80 and $5.10, and the $120,000 winner's share of the purse increased her career earnings to $495,854.

Golf:

Tiger Woods is returning to play in Notah Begay's charity event.

It will mark the fifth time Woods will take part in the NB3 Foundation Challenge put on annually by his former college roommate at Stanford. This year's event at Turning Stone Resort is Aug. 27.

NFL:

The New England Patriots have claimed rookie running back Tyler Gaffney off waivers from Carolina. The 23-year-old was originally drafted by the Panthers in the sixth round of the NFL draft. The Patriots have also released veteran linebacker Josh Hull.

Last week running back Ray Rice of the Ravens received a two-game suspension from the NFL following his offseason arrest for domestic violence. The NFL is now facing opposition to the decision from people saying the punishment is too light.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Los Angeles defeated Indiana 77-73.
