MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, The New York Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 2-1 last night in a rain-shortened game called in the fifth inning under bizarre circumstances. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 6-4 last night. Jose Bautista homered and drove in two runs, and R.A. Dickey won for the first time in three starts. David Ortiz hit a three-run homer for the Red Sox, his fourth in three games, but Boston lost its second straight after winning the previous five. Elsewhere Kansas City edged the White Sox 2-1, Minnesota defeated Cleveland 3-1, the Angels won against Baltimore 3-2, and it was Oakland over Houston 9-7.
In interleague play, the Mets slid past Seattle 3-2, Tampa Bay blanked St. Louis 3-0, and Detroit beat Arizona 11-5.
In the National League, San Francisco trumped Philadelphia 3-1, Atlanta defeated Miami 6-1, San Diego topped the Cubs 8-3, Milwaukee won against Cincinnati 5-1, Colorado beat Washington 6-4, and it was Pittsburgh over the Dodgers 6-1.
NFL:
Tight End Rob Gronkowski has been cleared to play at the New England Patriots training camp. Coach Bill Belichick says the star tight end has been cleared after offseason knee surgery. The Patriots hold their first public practice of camp today.
The New York Jets have agreed to terms on a two-year deal with free-agent defensive end Jason Babin, giving Rex Ryan's defense a veteran pass rusher. Babin had 7 1/2 sacks last season for Jacksonville, and was released in the offseason.
Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles has reached a two-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs. A person familiar with the contract said the deal will keep Charles in Kansas City through the 2017 season.
Golf:
The oldest golf magazine in America will stop publishing in print next week as Golf World switches entirely to digital delivery. Golf World first was published in 1947, the year after Ben Hogan won his first major. The magazine is the news division of Golf Digest, which will continue to be printed monthly. Both magazines are published by Conde Nast.
Tour de France:
Race leader Vinzenzo Nibali of Italy gained key seconds during the 17th stage of the Tour de France to pad his lead. The winner of the race was Poland's Rafal Majka, who took the lead with a late breakaway on the last of four tough climbs in the Pyrenees.
The 17th stage covered around 77 miles and was the shortest stage in this year's Tour.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, Washington defeated Connecticut 89-75, and New York edged Los Angeles 66-64.
