World Cup:
In World Cup action, Germany doubled up Algeria in extra time 2-1, and France blanked Nigeria 2-0. Germany and France will go head to head in the quarterfinals. The U.S. World Cup team has gotten some good news as the U.S. Soccer Federation says that Jozy Altidore will be available for today’s second-round match with Belgium at 4 p.m. Altidore strained his left hamstring in the opener against Ghana and missed the following two games.
NBA:
Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd appears to be on his way to the Milwaukee Bucks. A person with knowledge of the details says the Bucks and Nets have agreed to a deal allowing Kidd to become Milwaukee's coach. The Nets will receive a second-round draft pick in 2015 and 2019.
MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, Tampa Bay bested the Yankees 4-3 in 12, Baltimore topped Texas 7-1, Detroit had a comeback win over Oakland with a homer at the bottom of the 9th 5-4 Tigers, and Kansas City trumped Minnesota 6-1, Seattle blew out Houston 10-4.
The Angels at White Sox game was postponed due to rain.
In the National League, Atlanta defeated the Mets 5-3, Washington beat Colorado 7-3, and San Diego beat Cincinnati 1-0.
Former New York Mets general manager Frank Cashen died yesterday at the age of 88. Cashen was most notably known for leading the Mets to the 1986 World Series championship.
In interleague play, the Cubs blanked Boston 2-0, and the Dodgers defeated Cleveland 1-0.
Tennis:
Defending champion and third seed Andy Murray has reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the seventh year in a row with a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 win over 20th-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa. Murray has won all 12 sets he's played in the tournament this year, dropping 32 games. His All-England Club winning streak is 17 matches, including the run to a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
Top-seed Novak Djokovic fought through shoulder pain to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4, 7-6.
Three of the top four women's seeds have now been eliminated with the loss by No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska. The 2012 Wimbledon runner-up fell in the fourth round to 22nd-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-3, 6-0. The top two seeds, Serena Williams and Li Na, lost last week.
AHL:
The home of the newly arrived Adirondack Flames is going on the auction block. Mayor Jack Diamond says the city-owned Glens Falls Civic Center has been operating at a loss since it was built in 1979. He says there's a projected shortfall of $900,000 this year based on events booked so far. Bidding is set to begin Aug. 18 and starts at $1.5 million.
