Stewart Hits Tiebreaking Single In Ninth To Help Yanks Win

Well, the Yankees had another good day.

Chris Stewart had a tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning and David Phelps matched efforts with Felix Hernandez for six innings to help the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 on Sunday.

The Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-5. David Ortiz hit a three-run home run.

Elsewhere in the American League, It was Texas over Toronto 6-4. Detroit passed Cleveland 4-1. Baltimore beat Tampa Bay 10-7. Kansas City blanked Houston 2-0 and the White Sox doubled up Oakland 4-2.

In the National League, the Mets fell to Miami 8-4 in 10 innings. Milwaukee crushed Philadelphia 9-1. The Cubs defeated Pittsburgh 4-1. Atlanta won against the Dodgers 8-1. Colorado bounced San Diego 8-7 in 10 innings. San Francisco beat Arizona 6-2 and it was St. Louis over Cincinnati 11-4 in 10 innings.

Lastly in interleague play, Washington shut out Minnesota 7-0 the first game in a doubleheader, and won again 5-4 the second game.

Checking NBA news, the Miami heat cruised ahead of the Spurs 103-84 in Game 2 of the Finals.

Elsewhere, Jason Kidd is very interested in rejoining the Nets. A person familiar with the situation says Kidd is interested in Brooklyn's head coaching position and plans to talk with the team this week.

In tennis news, Rafael Nadal became the first man to win eight titles at the same Grand Slam tournament when he beat fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the French Open final.

Finally in NASCAR, Jimmie Johnson dominated at Pocono Raceway to win his third race of the season.
