Starting off in London today, in women’s beach volleyball it will be an all American-final. Two-time defending Olympics champ Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings beat China 22-20, 22-20 for their 20th straight Olympic victory and fellow Americans Jennifer Kessy and April Ross rallied to beat the top-seeded Brazilians.
Aly Raisman, the captain of the U.S. women's gymnastics team, grabbed the gold in the floor exercise. She also earned the bronze medal on balance beam and was part of the gold medal winning U.S. squad in the team event.
On the track the US goes 2, 3 in the women’s 100m hurdles. Dawn Harper and Kellie Wells finished behind Australian Sally Pearson.
Sanya Richards-Ross of the U.S. outleaned Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica to win their 200-meter semifinal heat in 22.30 seconds. Two-time defending 200 champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica, and two-time runner-up Allyson Felix of the U.S. and 100 silver medalist Carmelita Jeter of the U.S. also advanced.
Cameroon's Olympic chief says seven of the country's Olympic competitors are missing from the athletes' village, prompting concern they may attempt to seek asylum in Britain. David Ojong, head of mission for Team Cameroon, says that the seven all currently hold visas which would allow them to remain in Britain until at least November. Britain's Home Office, responsible for immigration, said it could not comment on whether any of the seven had applied for asylum. Cameroon's diplomats in Britain have not yet commented on the matter but further details are expected Wednesday.
At home, Miamidoubled up the New York Mets 4-2. Despite being booed at Citi Field, ex-Met Jose Reyes extended his hitting streak to a career-high 25 games with an infield single.
The Yankees continue to struggle as the Detroit Tigers held them 6-5 for their 10th straight home win. The Yanks scored two in the ninth and had the tying run on third when Jose Valverde nailed down his 22nd save. Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in three in the Tigers' sixth straight win. And the Red Sox fall to Texas 6-3.
