House Gop Agenda
GOP leaders unveiled their list of legislative priorities today, two months after the start of the congressional session. Speaker Newt Gingrich and other top leaders were trying to answer claims that, compared to the start of the last session in 1995, this Congress has done little. The list of Republican priorities begins with balancing the federal budget, and also includes tax relief and a ban on certain late-term abortions. NPR's Brian Naylor reports.
Commanders Sacked
Three top Air Force officials have been relieved of command in connection with the plane crash that killed Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and 34 other people in Croatia. The Air Force says the brigadier general and two colonels responsible for the 86th Airlift Wing have lost the confidence of their commander, because of facts revealed in the probe of the plane crash. The statement does not assign any blame for the crash. The investigation continues. NPR's Martha Raddatz reports on today's developments.

The FBI announced today that it has arrested a civilian Navy intelligence analyst for allegedly giving classified information to South Korea. Robert Kim, a U.S. citizen who was born in South Korea, worked for the Office of Naval Intelligence. Army Panel
NPR's Barbara Bradley reports on today's order by Army Secretary Togo West to find out whether top commanders knew about allegations of sexual harassment or sex abuse in the Army, and whether they condoned a culture of sexual misconduct within the ranks. While West says the Army will face up to any problems it finds, some critics wonder whether talk will take the place of action.

Black Vote
African-Americans are traditionally among the Democrats most loyal voters, with more than 8-in-10 voting for the party nominees in recent presidential elections. But blacks are less likely than whites to vote. In an election as close as this, turning up the turn out among African-Americans is a top priority for Vice President Al Gore's supporters. From Chicago, NPR's Phillip Martin reports on the get-out-the-vote effort, and the Republican's parry.
E-Toys
Internet toy seller E-Toys was supposed to be one of the e-commerce companies with a shot at becoming a retail powerhouse. It had a top-rated Web site, a vast selection of high-end toys and excellent customer service. But as NPR's Elaine Korry reports, E-Toys is having a miserable holiday season. Sales are running way below expectations, cash is running short, and the company is unlikely to survive without a merger or a major sell-off of assets.
Peru - Spy Chief Update
Linda Wertheimer talks with Sebastian Rotella, staff writer for the Los Angeles Times in Lima, Peru, about the four-month-old manhunt for Vladimiro Montesinos, Peru's former chief of the National Intelligence Service. He says that top officials fear Montesinos could still threaten the country's fragile democracy as long as he's still at large. Eighty investigators are looking for him.
