A Vermont man faces about a year in prison for his role in a crash that killed a former Massachusetts police chief.
Frank Sargent originally pleaded not guilty and faced up to six years and fines totaling $9,000 for multiple counts, including negligent vehicle operation with death resulting. The Times Argus reports Sargent agreed to a plea deal and pleaded no contest to charges in connection with the death of 55-year-old Joseph Rebello and the serious injuries caused to two other people in the 2014 crash.
Defense attorneys had argued for leniency and probation, but prosecutors argued successfully for time behind bars.
The judge sentenced Sargent for one year and a day, to be followed by probation for three to six years.
