A Vermont town is abandoning a proposal to require people with target shooting ranges in their backyards to fill out a notification form and register their range with the town.
The Essex Select Board is still hoping to write a measure that will help prevent deaths like that of John Reiss, who was hit by a stray bullet from a nearby shooting range in September 2008.

Selectboard Chair Elaine Haney tells WCAX-TV that the board decided to scrap the proposal after a contentious public hearing on Aug. 19. She also says the board concluded, after doing some research, that the amendment could potentially get the town into legal trouble.

Haney says the board is looking at firearms ordinances in Colchester and Williston for ideas.
