Torres In Historic Congressional Win

Democrat Ritchie Torres will be among the first openly gay Black men in Congress. Torres won election Tuesday to a seat representing the South Bronx.

Results were still pending in a race involving another gay, Black New Yorker, Mondaire Jones. New Yorkers cast their final votes Tuesday in contests for president, Congress and the state legislature. In many contests, results were unlikely to come on election night. A record number of votes have been cast by mail and the state’s rules for counting those absentee ballots mean it could take weeks before results are finalized.
